Nicola Rae
Research Interests:
These include sound frequency visualisations as site-specific inquiry, and film as site-oriented analysis - other research interests include a socially situated and critically engaged artist/lecturer practice.
Biography:
Nicola Rae is an Associate Lecturer at Wimbledon College of Art - teaching and researching Critical & Contextual Studies in the Fine Art Foundation department.
Since 1995 her art practice has been based in London, at the collectively-organised APT Studios, Deptford. She has been a co-director of the artist group A2Arts since 1996 - proactively organising exchange exhibitions with other artist groups in Europe. Her work has been exhibited in galleries, alternative spaces and artist-run spaces within Europe for over fifteen years.
Her earthworks were included in the book 'Personal Structures: Works and Dialogues' (2003), organised by Rene Rietmeyer. Sixteen international artists including Callum Innes were interviewed by Peter Lodermeyer, and a series of related exhibitions, symposia and art fairs followed the book's launch.

Current Research
Research interests include analysing how the multimodal discourses of Fine Art Foundation students can keep informing a socially situated and critically engaged Contextual & Critical Studies. I am interested in reversing the psychological power relations inherent in interpretation and evaluation, through critical forums - making space for a more open, discursive dialogue in connection with audience responses to artworks.
This reflexively critical research has effected change within my own art practice, resulting in more site-aware media experimentation. Sound frequency visualisations, initially researched in 2001, have been developed further through a sound emission analysing computer program. 'Sound frequencies' works have included recording the curation of an exhibition, involving particular voices and impact sounds. The resulting sound visualisations were then exhibited two days later at the exhibition 'Threads'. Live sound frequency visualisations, which respond to audience participation, are currently being developed for the exhibition 'Perpetuum Mobile'.
'Interactions, Greenwich Peninsula, London 28-08-07' (a collaborative project with the Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park) involved filming estuarine and freshwater invertebrates through a microscope, interacting within confined environments. The site-specific sound track included evening flights taking off from London City Airport, passing cyclists, occasional traffic, waves breaking on the mud, and the sound of machinery from Prior's gravel works. These sounds contrasted with the noise of construction work on new homes, as government planning laws encourage ever increasing densities of housing on the peninsula.
