BA Fine Art: Painting at Wimbledon supports the diverse spectrum of approaches within contemporary painting practice. Painting is the starting point from which you establish your own subject matter and methodology, guided by a large, expert staff from predominantly painting backgrounds, but whose professional activity reflects the range of student work and media.

The skills of painting practice are promoted, as are the essential conceptual and practical skills needed to thrive as a contemporary artist. Your contextual awareness is developed so that you can understand the relevance of your own work to a contemporary audience. The painting pathway equips you to apply an informed critical awareness to your own decision-making.

As an applicant to this pathway course you will be curious about the role of painting - in its broadest sense - in contemporary fine art practice. You will have an aptitude and appetite for painting and drawing and an interest in contemporary art as well as art history. You will demonstrate the potential to work independently or to develop your work beyond set projects.

Through the pathway course, you will be supported by painting workshops, demonstrations, seminars, subject-specific field trips and the benefit of a specialist painting technician.

Key Facts

  • We offer flexible studio provision and many bookable project spaces.
  • We have professionally-acclaimed staff, affording variety and contemporary relevance.
  • There are opportunities to exhibit internationally, e.g. at Hans Brinker in Amsterdam.
  • There is an emphasis on drawing as analytical thinking.

Year 1

You will be introduced to experimentation within art making practices and theoretical issues. Through practical drawing projects, the use of work in museums and galleries, you will be encouraged to gain introductory knowledge of a broad range of historical and contemporary models of art practice. You will experience a number of workshop inductions and develop research skills, which will support your emerging studio practice.

Year 2

You will continue to experiment and develop, working with parallel strands of enquiry, progressing towards a greater focus as the year proceeds. Professional studies include a work placement or project that will enable you to align your practice with the professional world. You will take an elective unit, selected from a broad range of options to enhance your core subject of study.

Year 3

You will further develop your practice, realising a focused body of work, which will be presented as the final degree examination. You will also negotiate an appropriate balance of practical and theoretical work in the final assessment weighting and present a dissertation or equivalent alongside the final exhibition.

Recent painting alumni have been very successful and progressed to postgraduate study at various Colleges as well as exhibiting in the Bloomberg New Contemporaries exhibition, The Saatchi / Channel 4 'New Sensations' exhibition included five Wimbledon painting alumni (from a total of twenty exhibitors), and BBC2 'School of Saatchi' featured a 2008 graduate.

Past and present students have used the course placement to establish studio employment links with a variety of artists including Martin Creed, Varda Calvano, David Harrison, Danny Rolph, Simon Callery and Mark Wright.
