BA Fine Art: Print and Time-Based Media at Wimbledon supports contemporary art practices that make use of a broad range of technologies. These include video, animation, digital photography and sound equipment as well as analogue processes related to film (super 8 and 16mm), printed matter and editions.

The course is structured around group discussion and informed critical debate. You are encouraged to explore gallery-based practices and beyond incorporating installation, artists' publications, live art, screenings, broadcasts, and websites.

There is a particular emphasis on practices that move between the still and moving image and in different strategies for distributing artwork, employing techniques from both 'pop' and 'high' culture.

As an applicant for this pathway you will have an interest in experimenting with the facilities offered in order to expand your awareness of how media has become vital to contemporary art and continues to have a profound impact on contemporary culture.

Key Facts

Students regularly collaborate on film projects, produce print portfolios and show their work together at screenings and other events. Recent projects include ' Traversion' - a sound/ video art show in the Very Good Room Gallery, Shoreditch and 'Heritage' - a group show at Trinity Buoy Wharf, East India Quays.

As well as studio space and six bookable project spaces there is a filming/performance studio, sound studio, green-screen facilities, dark rooms, screen print, etching, 16mm and super 8 film cameras, and an animation suite.

There are opportunities to work with outside galleries such as the Serpentine Gallery (one of London's leading galleries) on artists' projects.

Year 1

You will be introduced to art making practices and key methods of research. You will create work from your own ideas and participate in a programme of specialist skills workshops and practical inductions including digital media, traditional print media, sound, animation, or in web-based and broadband technologies.

Year 2

You will expand your conceptual understanding through experimentation. Professional practice includes a placement or project that will enable you to align your practice with professional arts practices. You will take an elective unit, selected from a broad range of options to enhance your core subject of study.

Year 3

You will further develop and produce a focused body of work, which will lead to the final degree examination. You will negotiate an appropriate balance of practical and theoretical work and present a dissertation or equivalent. There will be opportunities for you to take part in a mid-year, off-site exhibition to explore and develop your plans for the end-of-year degree show.

While many graduates from Print and Time-based Media go on to pursue their own careers as artists, others have gone on to work as video editors for established artists at The Whitechapel Art Gallery.

Some are freelance, some are making music videos, and some are teaching Final Cut Pro. Others have set up galleries and collectives or gone on to pursue art -related careers as curators, critics, teachers or gallery staff.
