BA Fine Art: Sculpture at Wimbledon fosters an enquiring and experimental approach to sculpture practice, its histories and contemporary contexts.

Sculpture at Wimbledon encompasses a wide range of activities including performance, contextual or site-based works, large-scale installations, photography, drawing, sound and video as well as more 'traditional' sculpture processes such as bronze-casting and construction.

From the outset there is an emphasis on context and presentation and how this may impact upon both the conceptual and practical aspects of your sculpture practice. You will be regularly invited and challenged to exhibit and test out your work in the studio, project spaces and external locations at all stages of the course.

As an applicant to this pathway you will have an interest in working directly with materials and processes, media, space and place as vehicles for your ideas. You will thrive in a lively and stimulating studio environment that supports you to develop your individual practice as well as working as part of a team.

Key Facts

There are opportunities to work on site-specific projects such as a collaborative project at South Wimbledon Station sponsored by Platform for Arts, and PARK, an annual exhibition in local Cannizaro park.

There are exchange opportunities in a range of European capitals and to Kyoto, Japan.

Year 1

You will be introduced to a range of approaches, processes and theoretical frameworks relevant to sculpture and installation and the wider context of contemporary art practice. You will develop your studio work based on self-initiated proposals and themes discussed and planned with tutors.

Year 2

You will develop your practice with an emphasis on experimentation, contextualisation and analysis. You will also be encouraged to participate in exhibitions and placement projects as part of a portfolio of professional studies activities. You will take an elective unit, selected from a broad range of options to enhance your core subject of study.

Year 3

Your time will be mainly devoted to the development of an ambitious and focused body of work leading to your degree exhibition and assessment. To support this you will present a dissertation or equivalent based on your research interests. The year includes professional practice seminars and lectures, mid-year exhibitions and review presentations.

Recent graduates have gone on to postgraduate study and have undertaken artists' residencies in Norway, Spain and France. Graduates are also employed as curators, in arts management or teaching.

Work placements have led to employment with artists such as Jamie Shovlin, Ryan Gander and Gavin Turk and galleries Haunch of Venison and Peer.

Graduates have also found that the transferable skills acquired during the course have proved useful in other fields such as project management, web and furniture design and various entrepreneurial activities.

Portfolio Advice

  • Documentation of work - this can be in the form of photographs, slides or videos of completed art work and should include work in progress shots if possible.
  • Actual art work - where possible.
  • Sketchbooks & drawings produced in the last 2 years (or earlier if appropriate).
  • A recently submitted essay / written review of an exhibition visited in the last year.
  • A gallery notebook with images & information on exhibitions and museum collections visited in the last 2 years.
  • Evidence of some interesting, visually strong art work that demonstrates an appetite for experimentation and an enquiring, inquisitive mind.
  • Evidence of self-motivation and an ability to develop work under self-direction.
  • Evidence of some ability to work with materials, media, concepts and processes that result in sculpture, installation or site-related work.
  • Evidence of an interest in how an artwork can be physically presented, and how this might influence the way that it is understood.

While each student's portfolio should represent their response to set projects and other coursework from their Foundation course (or equivalent), it would be helpful if it also included work that showed developments in self-directed and self-initiated study.
